Tax Rate and Fiscal Year 2015-2016 Budget Approved

The Village Council voted in Estero’s first official property tax level and fiscal year budget.

The ad valorem operating millage rate is 0.8398 mills, which is about 84 cents per $1,000 of taxable value.  The fiscal year budget for general fund expenditures is $6,586,500, which starts October 1, and runs through September 30, 2016.

It is expected that there will be $5.03 million in budget reserves on September 30, 2016, the Village’s first full fiscal year.

Surpluses in revenue may be used for reserves for emergency contingencies as well as capital improvement projects.  The Council will hold public hearings in the future to discuss and prioritize capital improvement projects.

Village Manager Candidate

Steven Sarkozy, 61, who most recently served as village manager of Carlsbad, California, was selected by the Council for negotiation of a contract for the position of Village Manager.

Councilmember Bill Ribble, Interim Village Manager Peter Lombardi and Village Attorney Burt Saunders will serve as the team to negotiate a contract with Sarkozy and provide an effective date of employment.

Tamara Hanlin, former village manager of Beverly Hills, Michigan, was selected as runner up should negotiations fail with Sarkozy.

Florida Power & Light Franchise

Council adopted a non-exclusive, 30-year franchise with the Florida Power & Light (FPL) Company.  FPL will start to make monthly payments totaling $593,000 from January 1, 2016 through September 30, 2016.  Thereafter, the Village expects to receive $791,000 annually.

Public Input

During public input on non-agenda items, Estero resident Beverly McNellis asked everyone to note on their calendars that the second annual “light up Estero” holiday event will be on Saturday, December 5, adjacent to the Estero United Methodist Church on US 41 and Lord’s Way.  Santa will arrive via an Estero Fire Rescue truck.

During Council communications, Councilmember Bill Ribble stated the contract for the future Village Hall offices located at 9401 Corkscrew Palms Circle should be completed by next week.
