The following information is provided by Cougar Contracting, Inc.:

Corkscrew Road Widening Project – Phase I Construction Project:  The project widens Corkscrew Road to six lanes from Ben Hill Griffin Parkway to Fire House Lane, and to four lanes from Fire House Lane to Bella Terra Boulevard.  The project includes adding on-road bike lanes, some sidewalk, installing new drainage, and constructing a wildlife crossing approximately 1000 feet west of the entrance to Cypress Shadows Boulevard.  This crossing will coincide with a regional flow-way that crosses Corkscrew Road at that location. The Village of Estero will be installing shared use paths, lighting, and landscaping as phasing allows.  Drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists are urged to use extra caution when traveling through the work zone.  Please be aware of shifts in travel lanes and bike lanes, sidewalk detours, miscellaneous turn lane closures, and uneven pavement throughout the project.  

Please use caution and drive with courtesy and patience throughout the project area.  Residents are entering and exiting communities on both sides of Corkscrew Road.

The following information is provided by Cougar Contracting, Inc.:

  • Motorists should expect lane shifts and lane closures during the nighttime/overnight hours on Thursday March 14 for the contactor to continue work to finish structural asphalt throughout the project.  One lane in each direction will remain open during this work.
  • Motorists should expect lane shifts and lane closures during the nighttime/overnight hours starting on Sunday, March 17 for installing the final lift of asphalt throughout the project.  This work is expected to last about two weeks.  One lane in each direction will remain open during this work.  The contractor is bringing in two crews to accelerate a portion of this work. 
  • Crews are installing signage, sod, and fencing throughout the project.
  • The contractor continues to complete concrete work including curb and sidewalk.  Motorists should expect construction vehicles entering and leaving the roadway.
  • The sidewalk on the south side of the road from Ben Hill Griffin Parkway to Stoneybrook Golf Drive has been opened to pedestrians.  Please be aware that some areas are a temporary surface.  The Village of Estero is constructing the shared use path.

The work activities above are scheduled to occur, however unforeseen underground conditions and weather may affect this schedule.

Corkscrew Road Widening Project – Phase 2 Construction Project:  The project constructs four, 11-foot-wide travel lanes from Bella Terra Boulevard to just east of Alico Road, and a new traffic signal at the Alico Road intersection.  Also included are on-road bikes lanes in each direction, a 10-foot-wide shared use path on the south side of the road, a 6-foot sidewalk on the north side of the road, and street lighting.  The 22-foot wide (varies) median includes various hardwood and palm trees as well as shrubs.

Drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists are urged to use extra caution when traveling through the work zone.

  • Crews are installing underground water main along Corkscrew Road between Corkscrew Woods Parkway and the eastern boundary of Corkscrew Shores.  The sidewalk in this area is closed.
  • FPL will be mobilizing to site to begin power pole installation throughout the project.
  • The contractor is scheduled to be clearing vegetation and performing earthwork during daytime hours.  Some clearing is east of Corkscrew Shores.  This is in preparation for construction of a retention pond.
  • Crews are scheduled to install fencing on the east end of the project.
  • Crews are installing erosion control and traffic control devices throughout the project.
  • The contractor is identifying existing utility locations throughout the project.  Crews may be working close to the roadway.  Motorists are asked to drive with caution.
