Lee County Solid Waste has launched its “Take Charge” campaign to educate residents and visitors on proper battery disposal. Residents are reminded not to place any batteries in their recycling carts. Household alkaline batteries, AA, AAA, C, D, 9-volt and button batteries can be disposed of in your regular garbage can. Any other type of battery (rechargeable, nickel-cadmium, automotive, lithium-ion, lead-acid) should be recycled at the Household Chemical Waste Facility at 6441 Topaz Court in Fort Myers. Bring your family and friends to the Collier-Lee Honor Flight, Mission #25, Welcome Home Celebration starting at 8:30 p.m., Saturday, at RSW International Airport.  You will find it’s one of the most patriotic events you have ever experienced. You will meet and greet 85 WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam War veterans as they return from their trip to Washington, D.C. Beginning Monday, September 18, crews will be reconstructing the intersection of Midnight Blue Boulevard at Corkscrew Road.  During this time, one half of the driveway will remain open to two-way traffic, for both entering and exiting the community. Lead docent at Koreshan State Park Ron Wescott will describe how the Koreshan Unity Settlement moved from Chicago to southwest Florida in 1893 and had a profound effect on the development of this area. Lee County residents are urged to use caution Wednesday even as Hurricane Idalia has moved well away from the area. Coastal street flooding is still present and is expected to occur again midafternoon today at high tide. Avoid unnecessary trips. Gusty winds remain possible. Twenty-four individuals and families stayed in the Safe Haven at the Estero Recreation Center last night; it closed at 1 p.m. today. Any residents who have concerns post Idalia can call 2-1-1.
