Council voted to purchase land on Three Oaks Parkway to establish two ponds to address flooding concerns, which could favorably affect neighboring flood insurance rates This purchase also preserves green space in place of additional development. Join local invasive species management professionals from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., Saturday, February 24, at River Oaks Preserve, to learn how to recognize and remove invasive plant material common to our area. Volunteers will be working in the beautiful scrubby flatwoods east of the north branch of the Estero River. You should bring work gloves, closed-toe shoes, pants, long-sleeved shirt as well as water, lunch/snacks, bug spray, sunscreen and your favorite weeding tool. Engage Estero is inviting residents to help celebrate and honor Jim Shields at the inaugural “Don Eslick Estero Person of the Year Award” dinner at 6 p.m., Thursday, February 8, at The Club at Grandezza. For over 19 years, Jim Shields has provided leadership and commitment to maintaining and improving the quality of life in Estero and, notably, improving education in our community. He created the 2-5-8 Graduate Junior Achievement program, including 135 volunteers, impacting over 2800 students. Estero Recreation Center will host a Parents Night Out program from 4:30 to 9 p.m., Saturday, January 20, at 9200 Corkscrew Palms Blvd. This special event is for children ages 6-13 years old. Activities will include games and a pizza dinner. The cost is $5 for members.  Pre-register at www.leeparks.org/register. The registration deadline is noon Friday, January 19.
