KLCB Executive Director Trish Fancher and Julie Yellig Congratulations to the Estero volunteers who were recognized at Keep Lee County Beautiful’s (KLCB) Environmental Stewardship Awards Ceremony with an Outstanding Adoption Group Award on March 2.  These volunteers were recognized for their work in the Adopt a Road program to clear litter and debris and improve the environmental health and beauty of Estero. The mission of KLCB is to inspire, educate, and engage the Lee County community in improving, beautifying, and protecting our environment.  The organization supports Estero volunteers with supplies to perform this work. Public Comment on non-agenda items: A volunteer with the Coccoloba Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society gave an update on the River Oaks Preserve at the east end of Broadway Avenue. She stated there have been over 3,000 hours of volunteer service provided at the preserve in the past 8 months and the preserve is up and running following a massive cleanup. Council will start their meeting at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, addressing a contract for installing a Village of Estero monument sign on US 41 at the southern border of Estero. This will be followed be a second reading and public hearing for an ordinance amending the land development code to establish standards for elevated single-family homes. Much of the work originally scheduled for this week was rescheduled for the following week to minimize impacts to traffic AFTER the traffic shift occurs. · RESCHEDULED: During the nighttime/overnight hours on Monday, February 27 through Wednesday, March 1, motorists are urged to plan extra time when using the Ben Hill Griffin Parkway intersection. Crews will be replacing the signal. Public Information Meetings Estero River Park The Board started their meeting reviewing the proposed first phase of the Estero River Park.  Plans include an access drive, 85 parking spaces, bike racks and Old Florida-styled restrooms on the north side of the Estero River.  The restrooms will be hooked into the nearby utility.  There will be a bridge crossing the river to the 8 foot ADA-accessible, porous multi-use paths on the southern side of the river. There is a Village-wide election for a District 5 Councilmember    Residents throughout the Village are being asked to vote for the District 5 candidate of your choice, Gary Israel or Rafael Lopez, in the upcoming election regardless of which district you live in. Districts 3, 4, and 7 were unopposed, so they will not be on the ballot.  Those seats will be filled by: District 3 Vice Mayor and Councilmember elect Jon McLain, District 4 Councilmember elect Lori Fayhee, and District 7 Councilmember elect George Zalucki. Lee County Parks & Recreation Summer Camp registration opens at 7 a.m. Monday, Feb. 27. Registration is expected to draw thousands of youngsters to programs, outings and activities at the department’s traditional camps, middle school camps and specialty camps. Traditional camps are for children that have completed kindergarten through fifth grade. Middle school camps are for sixth through eighth grade. Specialty and special needs camps ages vary; check locations for specific ages.
