The Lee County Metropolitan Planning Organization provides direction in planning future transportation improvements and projects in the county. The Bicycle Pedestrian Coordinating Committee (BPCC) includes citizens and local and state agencies’ staff responsible for bicycle and pedestrian planning for their respective agencies. The BPCC coordinates bicycle/pedestrian planning activities among these agencies and reviews funding for bicyclists and pedestrians in state and federal aid transportation projects. It also advises the MPO board about development of the bicycle/pedestrian element of its transportation plan and makes recommendations regarding funding for bicyclist/pedestrian projects in FDOT’s five-year work program. Council started their meeting by addressing the slate of 16 applicants for the Village’s new Planning, Zoning & Design Board.  This Board will take over the functions formerly assigned separately to the Planning & Zoning Board and the Design Review Board. Some of the applicants are former board members, which are known to Council. Winter weather impacting the central and eastern regions of the US has caused shipping delays for first dose COVID-19 vaccines in Lee County. First doses appointments scheduled for tomorrow, February 17 are rescheduled for Thursday, February 25 at the same time. People in Lee County who have an appointment this week to get their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine will still be able to get their shot. The Estero High School girls varsity soccer team became district champs for the fourth consecutive year in their game against Naples with a score of 4-3.   Their record stands at 14-2-2, scoring an average 6 goals per game. Come out and cheer on your team as they play in the regional quarter against North Fort Myers at Estero’s Jeff Sommer Stadium at 7 p.m., Tuesday, February 16. The YMCA is providing swim instructions and water safety to Estero’s children from underserved communities through a special agreement with the Village of Estero starting February 15. The Village negotiated with the YMCA to provide environmental education at the children’s camp, Camp Estero, on Corkscrew Road throughout the year.  This water safety program is an extension of that agreement. The Y is providing “scholarships” for Estero residents, i.e., financial assistance to help cover the cost of the program.  Depending on the family’s situation, the Y may cover partial or 100% of the cost, based on the family’s household income.
