The project widens Corkscrew Road to six lanes from Ben Hill Griffin Parkway to Fire House Lane, and to four lanes from Fire House Lane to Bella Terra Boulevard. The project includes adding on-road bike lanes, some sidewalk, and new drainage.
Work begins this fall to construct a wildlife crossing approximately 1000 feet west of the entrance to Cypress Shadows Boulevard, which coincides with a regional flow-way that crosses Corkscrew Road at that location.
Once the project is completed, the Village of Estero will be installing shared use paths, lighting, and landscaping.
Drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists are urged to use extra caution when traveling through the work zone. Please be aware of shifts in travel lanes and bike lanes, sidewalk detours, miscellaneous turn lane closures, and uneven pavement throughout the project.
The following work activities are scheduled to occur, weather permitting:
- Beginning Monday, October 11, pedestrians will be redirected onto temporary walkway on the south side of Corkscrew Road from Ben Hill Griffin Parkway to Stoneybrook Golf Drive.
- Currently in the area between Wild Blue Boulevard and Cypress Shadows Boulevard (The Preserve at Corkscrew) vehicles are using temporary lanes on the north side of the road to allow crews to work on the south side of Corkscrew Road.
- Turn lanes are currently unavailable at Wild Blue Boulevard and Cypress Shadows Boulevard (The Preserve at Corkscrew).
- The westbound, right-turn lane between Grande Oak Boulevard and Ben Hill Griffin Parkway will be closed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Motorists may still make a right-turn into the Shoppes at Grande Oak.
Crews are installing curb, drainage, and sod, as well as performing earthwork, and relocating utilities. MOTORISTS ARE REMINDED TO OBEY THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT. Please use caution and watch for workers and construction vehicles entering and leaving the roadway. Estimated completion is fall 2023. Project cost is approximately $23 M. The contractor is Cougar Contracting, LLC.
