Today’s News

Thanks to In-House Testing All Patients Have Their Results

We are happy to announce that for the first time since we started COVID-19 testing, our community’s backlog of pending tests has been cleared and all patients have received their results. The introduction of in-house testing last week was instrumental in clearing the backlog, and our laboratory teams have worked around-the-clock to provide faster results. Moving forward, we should continue to be able to return most test results within 24 hours.

Our Personal Protective Equipment Supply is Stable

We are working closely with established supply partners and the state’s emergency management team to ensure our personal protective equipment (PPE) supply is stocked. At this time, we are not critically low on PPE, but continue to accept donations through the Lee Health Foundation. PPE donations to support our Lee Health heroes can be delivered to the Lee Health Foundation office at 9800 S. HealthPark Dr., Suite 406. Please call us ahead at 343-6950 to arrange a time to drop off the supplies.

Thank you, Safe-Strap Company

We are incredibly grateful to Safe-Strap Company for donating homemade cloth masks this week for our patients and visitors. Safe-Strap owner Paul Giampavolo and his skilled sewing team repurposed their sewing machines to make 3,000 masks in just one week. Check out photos of the Safe-Strap team sewing masks here.

Florida Department of Health (Updated 4/14/2020 at 6:00 pm)

~20,984 positive cases in Florida residents and 644 positive cases in non-Florida residents~

TALLAHASSEE —To keep Florida residents and visitors safe, informed and aware about the status of the virus, the Florida Department of Health has launched a COVID-19 dashboard that will be updated twice daily. We also encourage all Floridians to take the COVID-19 Community Action Survey by visiting www.StrongerThanC19.com.

Today, as of 6 p.m., there are 21,628 total** Florida cases.

While Florida’s testing has increased over the past week, the percent of those testing positive for COVID-19 overall is 10 percent. Of the 9,954 tests performed on April 13, there were 1,271 positive results, or 13 percent.

Forty-seven people have died who tested positive for COVID-19 in Broward, Dade, Duval, Escambia, Hillsborough, Lee, Manatee, Orange, Palm Beach, Sarasota and St. Lucie counties.

New Florida cases include:

  • 261 additional positive COVID-19 cases (247 Florida residents and 14 non-Florida residents) reported to the Florida Department of Health.
  • There are currently 20,984 positive cases in Florida residents and 644 positive cases in non-Florida residents.

Florida recently partnered with private laboratories around the state to expand COVID-19 laboratory testing capacity. This partnership will increase the number of tests conducted each day and ensure Floridians receive the critical health information they need in a timely manner.

Expansion to private laboratories changes the COVID-19 testing landscape in Florida. Private laboratories are running tests as they receive swab samples from practitioners. Testing and reporting times vary among commercial and DOH laboratories. Demographic information may be updated during investigations. These twice daily reports reflect the state’s efforts to accurately and transparently share information.

  • The number of confirmed cases reported by countries reflects national laboratory testing capacity and strategy, thus the interpretation of the number of cases reported should take this into account.
  • WHO has published interim guidance on oxygen sources and distribution strategies for COVID-19 treatment. The document describes how to quantify oxygen demand, identify oxygen sources that are available, and select appropriate surge sources to best respond to COVID-19 patients’ needs, especially in low-and-middle income countries. For more details, please see here.
  • The Director-General thanked the United Kingdom for its generous contribution of £200 million to the global response to COVID-19, an act which he described as a ‘demonstration of global solidarity’. His opening remarks at yesterday’s press conference are available here.
  • A group of scientists, physicians, funders and manufacturers from around the world have pledged to collaborate, in coordination with WHO, to help speed up the availability of a vaccine against COVID-19. Their statement can be found, against here.
