Today’s News

A Message from Dr. Larry Antonucci

Yesterday, Governor Ron DeSantis announced the first steps toward reopening Florida. Part of the first phase includes allowing hospitals (in nearly all Florida counties) to resume elective surgeries beginning on Monday, May 4. Our teams at Lee Health have been working and will continue to do so over the next weeks, to ensure we can safely resume surgical procedures with all of the personal protective equipment we need. As I have mentioned before, with hospitals and health care systems across the country beginning to perform elective surgeries again, the supply of personal protective equipment (PPE) may become a limiting factor. Also, in addition to ensuring we have PPE, we are working out other patient safety precautions and procedures.

Though at this moment, I cannot share an exact date when Lee Health will be able to resume elective procedures, I am proud of the way we are proceeding—thoughtfully, cautiously, judiciously. We are our community’s health care system, and we have the sacred responsibility and privilege of safely caring for our families, friends and neighbors throughout Southwest Florida.

Four Lee Health Hospitals Earn “A” Grades for Patient Safety

We are proud to announce that for the third straight report card all four Lee Health adult acute care hospitals have earned the highest national marks for safe care. The Leapfrog Group announced its Spring 2020 Hospital Safety Grades, awarding Cape Coral Hospital, Gulf Coast Medical Center, HealthPark Medical Center and Lee Memorial Hospital each “A” grades.

Leah Binder, president & CEO of The Leapfrog Group, shared this sentiment: “As the nation copes with a challenging pandemic, our gratitude extends to hospital leadership and health care workers everywhere for their tremendous dedication. We hope this ‘A’ helps to thank the people who work and volunteer for Lee Health hospitals. They are role models in putting patients first, and their service has been extraordinary in our country’s time of need.”

Lee Health Adds Telerehab Service for Current Patients

In response to the pandemic and as an effective option for current physical, occupational and speech therapy patients, Lee Health is offering telerehab. This virtual service allows patients to communicate and meet with their therapists from the comfort of their own home. Through live video interaction on a smartphone, tablet or computer, therapists can provide expert advice, guided exercises and feedback to ensure patients meet their rehabilitation goals. Telerehab does not replace in-person visits but serves as a helpful tool during this time while rehabilitation offices are closed.

Healthy Lee Launches Kids with Compassion Initiative

An Opportunity to Deliver Virtual Smiles to Local Seniors

Kids with Compassion is a Healthy Lee initiative created in partnership with The School District of Lee County that encourages local students to create artwork and cards to send virtually to seniors in assisted living, nursing homes, memory care and other care facilities. In addition to submitting artwork, children can also register to be assigned a pen pal at a local senior living community. To learn more about this initiative, go to www.KidsWithCompassion.org.

Florida Department of Health (Updated 4/30/2020 at 11:00 am)

~32,801 positive cases in Florida residents and 889 positive cases in non-Florida residents~

TALLAHASSEE — The Florida Department of Health, in order to provide more comprehensive data, releases a report on COVID-19 cases in Florida once per day. The Florida Department of Health COVID-19 dashboard is also providing updates once per day. The state also provides a report detailing surveillance data for every Florida county. Previously, this information was only available for select communities. The surveillance data report is available here.

The Florida Department of Health also releases a list of long-term care facilities in Florida associated with COVID-19 cases with active cases in each facility in order to provide real-time data. The list of long-term care facilities with active COVID-19 cases is available here. To date, 423 individuals that were staff or residents of a long-term care facility have died.

Today, as of 11 a.m., there are 497 new positive COVID-19 cases (483 Florida residents and 14 non-Florida residents) and fifty deaths related to COVID-19. There are a total of 33,690 Florida cases** with 1,268 deaths related to COVID-19.

While Florida’s testing has increased over the past week, the percent of those testing positive for COVID-19 overall is 9 percent. On April 29, five percent of new cases** tested positive.

Since 11 a.m. on April 29, fifty people have died who tested positive for COVID-19 in Broward, Charlotte, Dade, Hernando, Lake, Lee, Manatee, Okaloosa, Orange, Palm Beach, Pasco, Pinellas and Polk counties.

Florida recently partnered with private laboratories around the state to expand COVID-19 laboratory testing capacity. This partnership will increase the number of tests conducted each day and ensure Floridians receive the critical health information they need in a timely manner.

Expansion to private laboratories changes the COVID-19 testing landscape in Florida. Private laboratories are running tests as they receive swab samples from practitioners. Testing and reporting times vary among commercial and DOH laboratories. Demographic information may be updated during investigations. These twice daily reports reflect the state’s efforts to accurately and transparently share information.
