Today’s News

A Message from Dr. Larry Antonucci

I would like to wish a very happy Nurses Week to our ExceptionalLee nurses! To all of our nurses, thank you for dedicating your career and life to caring for others. Thank you also for persevering, and for rising above the hard days, the fear, anxieties, exhaustion; and for making difficult sacrifices and decisions throughout our fight against COVID-19. You have stepped up in service to others in ways not everyone could, and you have shown remarkable strength and courage.

Celebrate Lee Health Nurses during National Nurses Week
National Nurses Week begins today and we proudly recognize our nurses who care for our community. Lisa Sgarlata, chief patient care officer & chief nurse executive, shared this sentiment: “This year, more than ever, we are reminded of the selfless and heroic acts our nurses perform on a daily basis. They put themselves on the frontlines and we are grateful for the sacrifices they make to ensure our patients receive the best care possible. We cannot thank them enough for their patience, professionalism, hard work and dedication. We are a stronger community because if their commitment to excellence.”

To mark the occasion, the Lee County Board of County Commissioners issued a proclamation acknowledging the tireless work of our nurses every day and night, year-round, and especially during this challenging time. We appreciate their recognition of our nurses.

We invite you to join the Year of the Exceptional Lee Nurse Facebook event to read and share photos and messages of gratitude for our nurses.

Always Wear a Face Mask in Public

As our community begins to slowly reopen, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) continues to recommend that everyone wear a face mask in public settings. Handmade cloth face masks are effective and can be made from items, such as t-shirts and bandanas. The CDC provides step-by-step sew and no-sew instructions, here.

Lee Health continues to accept donations of handmade cloth face masks for our patients. If you would like to donate, please drop them off at the Lee Health Foundation at 9800 S. HealthPark Dr., Suite 406. Please call ahead at 239-343-6950 to arrange a time to drop off the masks.

Florida Department of Health (Updated 5/6/2020 at 1:30 pm)
~37,020 positive cases in Florida residents and 982 positive cases in non-Florida residents~
TALLAHASSEE — The Florida Department of Health, in order to provide more comprehensive data, releases a report on COVID-19 cases in Florida once per day. The Florida Department of Health COVID-19 dashboard is also providing updates once per day. The state also provides a report detailing surveillance data for every Florida county. Previously, this information was only available for select communities. The surveillance data report is available here.
More than 16,800 test results were reported to the Department of Health on Tuesday, May 5. Today, as of 11 a.m., there are 563 new positive COVID-19 cases (528 Florida residents and 35 non-Florida residents) and sixty-eight deaths related to COVID-19.
While Florida’s testing has increased over the past week, the percent of those testing positive for COVID-19 overall is 8 percent. On May 5, 3.7 percent of new cases** tested positive.
The Florida Department of Health also releases a list of long-term care facilities in Florida associated with COVID-19 cases with active cases and number of deaths in each facility in order to provide real-time data. The list of long-term care facilities with active COVID-19 cases is available here. The list of long-term care facilities with deaths in available here. To date, 577 individuals that were staff or residents of a long-term care facility have died.
There are a total of 38,002 Florida cases** with 1,539 deaths related to COVID-19.
Since 11 a.m. on May 5, sixty-eight people have died who tested positive for COVID-19 in Broward, Charlotte, Clay, Collier, Dade, Escambia, Hillsborough, Lee, Leon, Manatee, Orange, Osceola, Palm Beach, Pinellas, Polk and Sarasota counties.
Florida recently partnered with private laboratories around the state to expand COVID-19 laboratory testing capacity. This partnership will increase the number of tests conducted each day and ensure Floridians receive the critical health information they need in a timely manner.
Expansion to private laboratories changes the COVID-19 testing landscape in Florida. Private laboratories are running tests as they receive swab samples from practitioners. Testing and reporting times vary among commercial and DOH laboratories. Demographic information may be updated during investigations. This daily report reflect the state’s efforts to accurately and transparently share information.
