  6. Operation Blue Roof: temporary blue covering with fiber-reinforced sheeting to help reduce further damage to property until permanent repairs can be made. After the blue roof is installed, the structure is declared habitable. Not all roof types and locations qualify for the program. The initial sign-up period will end on Oct. 23.   9. Financial: Disaster loans up to $200,000 are available to homeowners to repair or replace disaster-damaged or destroyed real estate. Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 to repair or replace disaster-damaged or destroyed personal property. Applicable only to losses not covered by insurance or funding from FEMA for both personal and business or business operating expenses that could have been met had the disaster not occurred.   11. Financial: Check with your bank or credit card. A lot of financial institutions are offering extended deadlines for bills.
  12. Financial: IRS Special tax law provisions may help taxpayers and businesses recover financially from the impact of a disaster, especially when the federal government declares their location to be a major disaster area. Both individuals and businesses in a federally declared disaster area can get a faster refund by claiming losses related to the disaster on their tax return for the previous year. This is usually done by filing an amended return. Depending on the circumstances, the IRS may grant additional time to file returns and pay taxes. To be eligible for this benefit program, your address must be in a federally declared disaster area. You can deduct casualty losses in one of two ways: On your return in the year the disaster happened, or File an amended return to deduct the loss in the year prior to the disaster. You must use Form 4684 to report a gain or deductible loss.
