FEMA

On March 29, FEMA verbally informed Lee County and four municipalities (City of Bonita Springs, City of Cape Coral, Town of Fort Myers Beach and the Village of Estero) that it would be potentially removing discounts on the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) on premiums that allow residents to save money on their flood insurance effective October 1.

FEMA has expressed concerns related to compliance with the NFIP.  The Village, and each of the other jurisdictions similarity cited, maintains that we are in compliance.

Staff is working proactively to protect the Community Rating System classification of 6 which allows for up to a 20 percent reduction in flood insurance costs for Estero residents.

Staff has been working with FEMA, the County and other municipalities to resolve the issue.

FEMA has indicated there are a number of Estero residents who did not have permitted repair work performed, and Code Enforcement has been proactively citing and reaching out to those residents.

The Village will provide an update as new information becomes available. The Village has a webpage which includes information about the NFIP and Community Rating System here.
