Community organizations present scholarships to Estero High School students
Three $1,000 scholarships were presented to Estero High School seniors on May 5 thanks to the Estero Chamber of Commerce, Estero Council of Community Leaders (ECCL) and the Estero Historical Society. Students were asked to submit a two-page essay on one of the following topics: Business in the Estero Area (sponsored by the Estero Chamber of Commerce), Governance in the Estero Area (sponsored by the ECCL) and History of the Estero Area (sponsored by the Estero Historical Society). Lee Commissioners approve maintenance contract for water quality projects, including Estero’s Halfway Creek
The Lee Board of County Commissioners voted this week to approve a contract to maintain 13 filter marshes throughout the county that were created as part of the board’s ongoing commitment to water quality. The Halfway Creek filter marsh is located at the power line between Fountain Lakes and Marsh Landing. The contractor, North Fort Myers-based Woods & Wetlands Inc., will provide continued maintenance of previously constructed water-quality improvement projects. Maintenance includes the removal of exotic vegetation, overgrowth and sediment. Continual maintenance is a permit requirement and ensures the water quality improvements function as intended. Rezoning of the Estero on the River property among topics for the Planning, Zoning and Design Board on May 10, 2022

Estero to move to single-day collections
Garbage, recycling and yard waste to be collected on the same day Beginning Monday, May 16, residents of Estero only have to put their trash, recycling and yard waste to the curb once a week. Waste Pro, Lee County’s contracted hauler for the area, is announcing the service enhancement through postcards mailed to each of the 45,500 affected addresses. Volunteers helped keep Estero’s roads beautiful throughout the season
ECCL’s Adopt-A-Highway volunteers Frank Connolly, Sharon Hall and John Hersh gathering litter along Hwy 41. Kudos to the many Estero residents who joined together again this season to help keep our roadways free of litter and looking beautiful. Residents volunteered through three programs: FDOT’s Adopt-A-Highway Program, Lee County’s Adopt-A-Road Program and the Village of Estero’s Adopt-A-Road Program supported by Keep Lee County Beautiful. Safe, sober driving is the message to be conveyed in Estero High School project
Estero High School students are in the process of videotaping a Public Service Announcement (PSA) to help educate the public on better road safety. The Estero students’ PSA addresses what can result from driving drunk. The videotaping is taking place over several days and is being coordinated by Kea McElfresh, Theater/TV Production teacher with Estero High School, with WINK-TV, Estero Fire Rescue, Lee County Sherriff’s Office, Bonita Video and Estero Life Magazine. Village monument signs and roadway contracts among topics addressed by Council on April 20, 2022
Council presented Burt Saunders, Esq., Gray Robinson P.A., with a proclamation recognizing him for serving as Village Attorney since the Village’s first meeting on March 17, 2015 through April 20, 2022. Lockwood House The meeting started with a short briefing on the Estero on the River property by Community Development Director Mary Gibbs and Public Works Director David Willems. This is the 67-acre property off of US 41 and Corkscrew Road. The portion of the property south of the river will be rezoned for park and open space public use.
