Protect our Waters with Proper Fertilization
Fertilizing your lawn with nitrogen or phosphorus-based products in the summer (June through September) does more harm than good. That fertilizer never makes it to the plant roots, it just gets washed into storm drains and floods our valuable waterways with food for unwanted algal blooms. Wait to fertilize until rainy season is over, and maybe again in March or April. For more ways you can keep our waters free of pollutants, check out our flyer on how your landscape maintenance can protect our waters at: https://estero-fl.gov/landscape You can also get more information on our website at: https://estero-fl.gov/residents/

Grease and oil do not belong in septic systems
If your home uses a septic system, never pour grease, oil, or chemical down your drains. These substances can kill the bacteria that treat your waste water in the tank. The county provides multiple ways to dispose of hazardous liquids - which can be found at: https://estero-fl.gov/for-residents/hazardous-waste-disposal. For more ways that septic system owners can protect our waterways, see our webpage for preventing water pollution.
