Three $1,000 scholarships are available for Estero High School seniors thanks to the Estero Council of Community Leaders, Estero Chamber of Commerce and the Estero Historical Society. Students will need to submit a two-page essay on one of the following topics: History of Estero Area (sponsored by the Estero Historical Society), Governance in the Estero Area (Sponsored by the ECCL), or Business in the Estero Area (sponsored by the Estero Chamber of Commerce. Lee Health’s System Director of Government Relations Michael A. Nachef gave an update on COVID-19, describing some positive trends but warning that we all must continue to protect one another by wearing masks, social distancing, avoiding crowds and washing our hands.  He explained that only 10 percent of the US population has been immunized while we need to have 60 – 80 percent of the population to be immune before we can consider relaxing these efforts. Public Hearing The Groves monument signs The Groves is a  72-home development north of Corkscrew Road and east of Sandy Lane. The applicant was requesting to replace 3 of the 4 existing signs at the development’s entrances. One sign is to be replaced, and one sign to be removed and not replaced at the development’s Groveline Court and Broadway East entrance. Two signs are to be removed and replaced at their Sandline and Sandy Lane entrance. Council started their meeting approving a resolution and interlocal agreements with the Lee County Property Appraiser and Lee County Tax Collector pertaining to the Corkscrew Intersection Improvement Assessment.  The improvements include construction of intersection and signal improvements at the intersection of Puente Lane and Corkscrew Road.  These assessments will begin on October 1, 2021, and will be on select parcels for costs incurred by the Village related to the Corkscrew Road/Puente Lane intersection improvements project. The Bicycle Pedestrian Coordinating Committee (BPCC) includes citizens and local and state agencies’ staff responsible for bicycle and pedestrian planning for their respective agencies. The BPCC coordinates bicycle/pedestrian planning activities among these agencies and reviews funding for bicyclists and pedestrians in state and federal aid transportation projects. It also advises the MPO board about development of the bicycle/pedestrian element of its transportation plan and makes recommendations regarding funding for bicyclist/pedestrian projects in FDOT’s five-year work program.
