Hurricane Irma’s Impact on Mosquito Populations
Lee County Mosquito Control District (LCMCD) is predicting a large mosquito outbreak as aresult of Hurricane Irma’s heavy rains and flooding. Coastal and inland areas have expansive areas of standing water, which will produce large numbers of mosquitoes. Treatments to control adult mosquitoes will begin Sept. 18th between the hours of 9 PM and 2 AM. Residents of Lee County may encounter adult mosquitoes for several days before experiencing relief from LCMCD control efforts. Labor Day Closings
The Village of Estero offices will be closed in observance of Labor Day on Monday, September 4. The offices will reopen again at 9 a.m. on Tuesday. Other Labor Day closings in Estero include the South County Regional Library. In addition, all garbage, recycling and yard waste collections will take place one day after the regularly scheduled collection day. This means that if the regular collection day is Monday, the collection truck will pick up that material on Tuesday. Lee County Parks & Recreation Summer Camp
Registration has started for the 2017 summer camps at Lee County Parks & Recreation. These camps draw thousands of youngsters throughout the region to programs, outings and activities at traditional camps, teen camps and specialty camps. Each year, the spots at Estero Recreation Center, Wa-Ke Hatchee, and Lakes Regional Park fill up before school is out. Summer camp runs eight weeks from June 5 through July 28. Estero High School student Sabrina Torres wins first place in statewide competition
Estero High School Chef Educator Jeremy Jasper proudly announced that student Sabrina Torres won first place in the Edible Centerpiece competition in the recently completed Florida ProStart state culinary competition held in Orlando. Jasper noted that Torres competed and won against 40 of the top culinary programs in the state. She was awarded a $12,000 scholarship to Keiser University, along with a new knife set. Jasper noted that the Estero High School culinary team also did very well in the competition and that he is proud of all of his students. Third annual Light Up Estero
Several hundred residents and their families came out for the third annual Light Up Estero event sponsored by the Rotary Club of Estero on Saturday, December 3, 2016. Mayor Nick Batos, Vice-Mayor Howard Levitan, Councilmembers Jim Boesch, Katy Errington, Bill Ribble and Jim Wilson all took part in the ceremonies.
