The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is operating a Disaster Recovery Center in Lee County to assist Floridians recovering from Hurricane Irma. Representatives from multiple government agencies will be available at the center to answer questions and help Floridians apply for assistance. Public Comment Two residents spoke in favor of having a moratorium on further development in Estero until the Village’s stormwater study is completed in order for the Village to determine the flooding impacts of further development. Two residents spoke about the importance of purchasing the 10-acre River Oaks Park Preserve off of East Broadway. Rotary volunteers hard at work in area of Estero slammed by Hurricane Irma
Volunteers from Rotary District 6960 went right to work to assist residents on Luettich and Sherrill Lanes clean up some of the damage Hurricane Irma inflicted on their neighborhood off West Broadway in Estero. The Rotary Clubs are “adopting” Hurricane Irma-damaged communities, giving priority to those communities with children and the elderly. This will be a long-term project to address all of Irma’s impacts, not only in Estero but Bonita Springs and other neighboring communities in southwest Florida. Lee County Solid Waste update: Debris removal being addressed
Lee County Solid Waste will begin regular curbside collection of yard waste Monday. This is the final step in resuming regularly scheduled pickup to households across Lee County since Hurricane Irma hit Sept. 10. Curbside household waste pickup and recycling pickup resumed earlier. Storm debris-related collection is ongoing countywide and is separate from regularly scheduled curbside pickups. Storm debris includes trees, branches, shrubs and other vegetation that was downed during Hurricane Irma. It also includes downed fencing, flooring, furniture, wallboard and other debris that had to be removed from homes due to structural damage or flooding. Public Comment on Non-Agenda Items Gary Israel, representing Rotary District 6960, spoke about the Irma Disaster Relief Fund and how the Rotary is setting up a Donor Advised Fund through the Rotary Foundation. Lee County Utilities and Bonita Springs Utilities message about lift stations
Lee County Utilities has lifted its request for residents to conserve water as it returns to normal operations. Lee County Utilities maintains over 600 lift stations throughout its collection system and power has been restored to most of them. More are regaining power daily. The system-wide Precautionary Boil Water Notice was lifted last week. There may be isolated boil water notices due to normal operations. Hurricane Irma’s Impact on Mosquito Populations
Lee County Mosquito Control District (LCMCD) is predicting a large mosquito outbreak as aresult of Hurricane Irma’s heavy rains and flooding. Coastal and inland areas have expansive areas of standing water, which will produce large numbers of mosquitoes. Treatments to control adult mosquitoes will begin Sept. 18th between the hours of 9 PM and 2 AM. Residents of Lee County may encounter adult mosquitoes for several days before experiencing relief from LCMCD control efforts. Labor Day Closings
The Village of Estero offices will be closed in observance of Labor Day on Monday, September 4. The offices will reopen again at 9 a.m. on Tuesday. Other Labor Day closings in Estero include the South County Regional Library. In addition, all garbage, recycling and yard waste collections will take place one day after the regularly scheduled collection day. This means that if the regular collection day is Monday, the collection truck will pick up that material on Tuesday.
