Presentation City of Sanibel Mayor Kevin Ruane asked Council to support key messages for the US Army Corps of Engineers, Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the South Water Management District pertaining to releases from Lake Okeechobee and their negative impacts. He explained that there are 163 cities in Florida which are directly affected by these releases, having a negative impact on the local economy.  He stated he is asking mayors to come together as one voice by signing and adding their logos to the letters. There will be a first reading of Ordinance 2018-01, repealing the Village’s Transitional Comprehensive Plan and providing for the transmittal of the proposed new plan to the state and other reviewing agencies. The Big Cypress Basin is one of two major watershed basins within the South Florida Water Management District’s (SFWMD) 16-county region.  The Basin covers Collier County and a part of Lee and Monroe counties. The Big Cypress Basin operates a network of 162 miles of primary canals, 46 water control structures and four pumps to provide flood control during the wet season and to protect the water supplies and environmental resources from over drainage of fresh water during the dry season. The Planning & Zoning Board conducted a public hearing for the Village’s first Comprehensive Plan on December 19.  They voted to recommend Council submit to the state the December 7 version of the Plan, as amended and with supplemental documents. Community Development Director Mary Gibbs reminded the Board and public that the Comprehensive Plan is the “Big Picture” 10-year document which will be reviewed again by Council on January 3 with a transmittal hearing on January 10, after which it will go to the state reviewing agencies before coming back to Council for review and adoption.
